CHAPTER FIVE

Amy really thought Nathan would show up after Billy left.She’d gone so far as to sneak down to his door and knock on it, but he hadn’t answered.She’d fallen asleep wondering if he was just a dream, and had spent most of the day at work entertaining the same thought.

At five the next evening, she hurried home, changed into her nicest jeans a nd tightest pullover, and hurried down the stairs.She stopped at his door an d took several deep breaths to calm her nerves.

There was still something about Nathan that kept her on edge, in spite of hi s actions in her apartment.He’d certainly made her feel fantastic, and then h e’d left with a promise of more.

Billy had never left her bed without satisfying himself.

She knocked on the door and waited.

Nothing happened.Was he at work?

She knocked one more time and listened.There was no hint of sound from in side.

Her heart sank.Maybe he’d moved.

Maybe she meant nothing to him at all, and he’d just left.

As she started to turn away, the door latch clicked and the door opened a litt le.

There was nothing on the other side but darkness.

“Nathan?”

“Yes?”

“I, uh, wondered what happened to you.May I come in?”

In the ensuing moments of silence, Amy felt like she’d stepped into a time warp.

Finally, the door opened a little more.“Yes.”

She stepped inside and was surprised to find absolutely no light in the r oom.Nathan guided her past the doorway with his hand on her arm, and she j umped when the door closed quickly behind her.He released her, and she ste pped back until she’d backed into the wall.

The weird thing was that the room was so dark, she wasn’t even sure if her eyes were open, and there was no sound to suggest that she was anything bu t alone.

She jumped again at Nathan’s voice whispering in her ear.“Are you afraid?

”

She gulped at the knot of fear in her throat.

“Good,”he said.“You should be.”

She wanted to tell him that she’d made a mistake and should leave, but her voice was gone, as was her ability to move.

His cold fingers touched her cheek and he slid them slowly down the side of her jaw, then to her neck, and then to her shoulder.

“Would you like to fuck in the dark, dear Amy?I promise it would be an expe rience you’d never forget.Not for the entire rest of your life.”

She felt his presence directly in front of her now, as if he were a wall sh e was about to run into.She managed to get out one word.“No.”

He disappeared.

Amy reached out but felt only air.“Nathan?”

A match flared, nearly blinding her.

She blinked, and then made out Nathan’s silhouette.He lit a candle across t he room from her, and then another.As she watched, he lit a dozen more and t he room filled with light, then he lit some in the next room before returnin g.

He stood across the living room and studied her.Candlelight danced across h is handsome face and glistened in his hair.
